A magic phylactery was used to store the souls and life force of liches. A mage had to create such a phylactery in order to become a lich, a highly expensive and taxing effort. Typically, a phylactery was a sealed metal box containing strips of parchment on which arcane phrases were inscribed. However, a phylactery could be any number of things. Roll a d6 and pick from the table below to see what phalactery your lich will use.

  1. This lich’s phylactery takes the form of a single gold coin with odd runes scratched into the surface. When the party goes to loot the lich, they will find it mixed in with 99 others.
  2. This lich’s phylactery takes the form of a crystal hourglass. If the lich is killed, the sand in the hourglass begins to count down to it’s return.
  3. This lich’s phylactery takes the form of an unassuming ancient tome. Did I mention that his lair is a massive, multi-level library?
  4. This lich’s phylactery takes the form of a human heart. This human heart is stitched inside the middle of a horrifying flesh golem.
  5. This lich’s phylactery takes the form of a magical vase that pours infinite, clean water. The lich gifted this vase to a desert village that otherwise has no access to water. Destroying the phylactery would be destroying an entire community.
  6. This lich’s phylactery takes the form of a King’s Crown. This Lich uses the crown to influence the ruler over time, while keeping his presence a secret.
